The newest superfruit to hit the West, and an antioxidant powerhouse to boot, maqui berries have been consumed by the Chilean Mapuche Indians for ages. 16 oz package.
Maqui berries (pronounced “MAH-key”) are small, dark purple to black berries found on trees growing in the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina. It is also known as the Chilean wineberry. Consumed by the Mapuche Indians for centuries to improve stamina and strength in their warriors, as well as overall health for their people, maqui berries are only now becoming better known in the West as an excellent antioxidant source, beneficial in the detoxification process and weight loss efforts.
Maqui berries have astonishing levels of antioxidants, including anthocyanins, delphinidin, malvidin, petunidin, cumarins, triterpenes, flavonoids, and cyanidin. They are also a good source of vitamin C and potassium. The antioxidants in maqui berries provide protection for the body's cells, and may help maintain healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Maqui berries support the cardiovascular system by encouraging blood flow, and may provide valuable benefits for the immune system, as well as supporting bone and joint health (and joint inflammation).
According to the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health: the average total anthocyanin content was 137.6 +/- 0.4mg/100g of fresh fruit (211.9 +/- 0.6 mg/100g of dry fruit). The relative high anthocyanin content and the important presence of polar polyglycosylated derivatives makes the fruits of Aristotelia chilensis an interesting source of anthocyanin extracts for food and pharmaceutical uses (source).
