The goji berry, a sweet red fruit native to Asia, serves as both a botanical medicine and a food, and has a very pleasant taste - somewhere between a cherry and a cranberry. It has been used as a medicinal food for thousands of years, and has been studied extensively in modern times to substantiate its health benefits. With over 15% protein, 21 essential minerals, and 18 amino acids, as well as lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), goji berry is a nutrient-dense superfood in a class all its own.
Here are just a few of the many benefits you get from eating goji berries:
How to use goji berries:
Nowhere is the goji berry more revered than in the province of Ningxia, situated along the Yellow River between the Yinchuan plain, the Helan Mountains and the Maowusu Desert in northwestern China. Ningxia has an unusually alkaline soil (pH 8.2 - 8.6), derived from the mineral-rich silt deposited by the Yellow River. That's why this region has become known in our industry as "The Goji Belt". The temperature can range from 102F to -16F, and although that might not sound comfortable to you, it's like heaven to goji vines. Extreme growing conditions bring out the best in them.
This may contradict what you've heard from one of the multi-level marketing organizations that insists that the best berries come from Tibet. If so, you might want to read The Tibetan Goji Myth.
An extensive body of clinical research has been conducted on goji berry and LBP, showing extremely beneficial results.
Our berries are rated as the “supreme” grade, which is the highest classification given in Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are exceptionally high in lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), the main active constituents of goji berry.
Studies show that LBP polysaccharides are exceptional sources of the essential cell sugars necessary for proper immune function and intercellular communication. These polysaccharides can enhance health in a variety of ways, including helping cancer patients rebuild their natural defenses, improving DNA restoration and repair, and maintaining normal cell growth, and they may help slow the aging process.
LBP also contains lutien and zeaxanthin, which are beneficial to visual acuity. Goji berries are an abundant source of nutrients that can provide retina protection, and are thus particularly recommended for diabetic patients.
In addition to LBP, the fruit contains a full complement of other nutrients:
Research validates a broad range of beneficial effects from using goji berries:
Goji berry is also widely used to reduce the craving for sugar. It is especially useful for hypoglycemic people and for hyperactive children. In addition, goji berry exhibits potent antioxidant activity and contains one of the highest concentrations of beta-carotene of any known food. In Asia, it has been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and sexual potency food of the highest order, widely believed to increase sexual fluids and enhance fertility.
In ancient times, people in China used goji berries to make tea, soup, stew, and wine, and chewed the dried fruit like raisins. These delicious fruits are still a main diet staple of many of the longest-living people on earth, including the Hunza of the Himalayas, who have regularly lived beyond 100 years of age. They are also used in many herbal formulas to maintain overall health during a wide variety of chronic conditions.
According to the principles of Chinese medicine, goji berry is a tonic, to be used to nourish and support the body whenever it suffers from illness or weakness. It can, however, be taken on a daily basis for general health. And with over 15% protein, 21 essential minerals, and 18 amino acids, it is a nutrient-dense superfood in a class all its own.

Eating an ounce of these berries gave me a daily "boost" but not like, say, caffeine. More like a low-key "happy buzz" effect. (Posted on 3/17/11)

I had some goji berries in my cupboard from Live Superfoods that had been there for a year. I had forgotten about them and did not remember why I had bought them. After eating three packages I noticed I could see better. I then bought 5 lbs. from Nuts online. They were dry and I felt nothing in my eyes after eating them. I would say that Live Superfoods has a better product and even tho the cost is higher, it is well worth it. (Posted on 3/4/11)

These gojis taste really good, fresh and chewy but not too dry. Larger berries than I got from another online source. I also order maca powder from Livesuperfoods. They ship fast, too. (Posted on 1/13/11)
