Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is mainly grown in the cold climate of the mountainous regions of China, Russia & India. In fact 90% of the world's Sea Buckthorn is grown in China & Mongolia alone. With its aggressive roots, it has been used through the ages in soil conservation to protect against erosion, providing a harvest (and an income) for the rural population of the region. Along with its ecological benefits, Sea Buckthorn has been valued for its medicinal benefits throughout central Asia for centuries. In fact early records show that Sea Buckthorn was a traditional component of Tibetan medicine as far back as the Eighth century.
Very thorny with golden orange berries, Sea Buckthorn is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Flavonoids, Folic acid and oils rich in essential fatty acids. It was used by ancient healers in the treatment of a number of maladies throughout China, Mongolia and India. The powerful antioxidant activity found in Sea Buckthorn is partially explained by the high concentration of Vitamin C, more than strawberries, oranges or Kiwi fruit. The berries have a very unpleasant taste, but various parts of the plant were used by medicine men for treatments as varied as the healing of wounds to skin diseases to digestive disorders.
