What are krill?
Krill are small shrimp or prawn-like creatures that feed the world's most mammoth animals: the great whales. Toothless great whales gulp down huge quantities of krill to provide the energy they need to fuel their massive bulk. A blue whale eats up to 8,000 pounds of krill each day during feeding season. These highly intelligent great whales aren't the only animals that depend on krill for their nutritional needs. So do seals, penguins, sea birds, squid and fish.
The hardy krill harvested from harsh Antarctic waters, the ones that comprise Dr. Mercola Krill Oil, are so important they are considered a "keystone species", an organism upon which many Antarctic predators depend. These semi-translucent crustaceans congregate in dense masses or swarms that can turn the ocean's surface pink or red.
Together with plankton, krill make up the largest biomass on earth, one of the most easily renewable food resources available, an excellent nutritional source from an environmental perspective.
Krill oil for Omega-3 fatty acids
Krill oil is a rich source of DHA and EPA. These omega-3 fatty acids are reported to lower cholesterol, protect heart health, combat inflammation, support brain and eye health, and even fight PMS symptoms.
- • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) makes up about 90% of the omega-3 fatty acids content in the brain, and is a major componant of brain cell membranes. DHA is critical to optimal brain function. Research supports its ability to reduce inflammation, and it may help keep arteries clear, and may even protect against cancer and slow down the aging process.
- • EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) has been shown to stabilize mood and reduce symptoms of depression. Research suggests it may play an important role in reducing the symptoms of psoriasis and lupus, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Lihe DHA, EPA may have cholesterol lowering benefits.
Evening Primrose Oil
Dr Mercola Krill oil contains evening primrose oil, a natural source of omega-6 fatty acids. Evening primrose oil is a rich source of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), and its reported health benefits range from reduction of PMS symptoms, reduced bloating, swelling, and cramping; to reduction of joint pain, and to treat skin problems such as eczema, acne, and rosacea. It has even been used as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.
Why Essential Fatty Acid Balance is
Critical to Your Health
Essential fatty acids include both omega-3 fats (such as EPA and DHA) and omega-6 fats (such as GLA). Essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured in your body but are beneficial to normal health and metabolism. In order to receive the anti-inflammatory and health benefits of these essential fatty acids, they must be consumed through diet or supplementation.
Although some omega-6 fatty acids, like GLA, are beneficial to your health, consuming an overabundance of them is not. The standard American diet, with its heavy emphasis on processed oils and fast foods, is often too high in omega-6 fatty acids. Not all omega-6 fatty acids behave in the same way; the omega-6 fatty acids found in processed oils and fast food can actually cause inflammation. The best omega-6s come from GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), from sources such as evening primrose oil, borage oil, or black currant oil.
The balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is crucial. The ideal balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is a 1:1 to 1:4 ratio. Dr. Mercola kept this ratio in mind when formulating Krill Oil for Women with Evening Primrose Oil.
Krill Oil for Women is delivered in a "Licap" capsule. These revolutionary capsules use an innovative fushion technology to create a hermetically bonded capsule.
