Goldenberries are succulent, marble-size golden fruits. Also known as cape gooseberry and agauaymanto berry, the goldenberry is native to Colombia and Peru, and can be found growing in warm climates on many continents, including Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
Tart and delicious, goldenberries are high in phosphorous, calcium, and vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, and B12. For a fruit, they are also extremely high in protein (16%). Goldenberries are reported to:
- Promote digestion
- Help control diabetes
- Clean the blood
- Aid in the treatment of the prostate gland
Goldenberries, or Physalis peruviana, can be found in markets from Venezuela to Chile. In Europe, they have become a favorite exotic fruit, and upscale markets pay premium prices for them. Both tart and sweet, they are used internationally in jams, sauces, pies, and puddings. They are best known in the United States as a preserve with the Hawaiian name of "poha." Our organic goldenberries are low-temperature dried, and are a delicious alternative to raisins.
